Journey to Machu Picchu

After flying into Cusco, and immediately feeling the altitude we boarded a train to Machu Picchu. After a four hour journey through breathtaking terrain, alongside small villages, racing rivers and steep gorges, we disembarked at Machu Picchu station. Climbing onto a bus, we labored up a small mountain road, accompanied by a young boy who played Peruvian folk music on his pipes. The clouds swept over the ruins and mountain peaks, one minute revealing the city in bright sunshine, the other cloaking it in mists, making it easy to imagine it still fully built. The verdant rain forests, thick with impenetrable vegetation underscored how this city was lost for so long. We were so inspired by the ecology, and the efforts with which Machu Picchu is now being preserved. Finally, wet through, exhausted from walking in the high altitudes and from our journey, we made it back down the mountain. There, in the cloud forest, the most glorious Inn awaits, a pioneer in sustainable tourism, with scented rooms, deep baths, exquisite Peruvian weavings and delicious local food. Yes, we indulged.
